Neural Control Of Sleep: 4 Key Players That Regulate Sleep

Sleep is divided into slow wave sleep (stage 1 through 4) and REM.
When in slow wave sleep, the basal forebrain sends GABA, inhibitor neurotransmitters, to other part of brain region causing slow wave sleep. During sleep, the reticular formation, which helps you wake up, is inhibited by the Raphe Nucleus. The Raphe nucleus sends serotonin, acting as inhibitors neurotransmitters, to the reticular formation causing it not to promote waking.
